HAMMERED CELTIC JEWELRY
Judy Sutcliffe
Sunday, June 1, 2008
1—4pm

It’s noisy but it’s fun and creative—you’ll be hammering copper and brass wire into a wide variety of jewelry—pendants, necklaces, bracelets, brooches, earrings— many featuring the Celtic spiral as a design element. You’ll also make a Celtic fibula or cloak pin, ancient ancestor of the safety pin, but much more attractive. You’ll go home with a nice collection of wearable art.

INTRO TO SILVERSMITHING
Kay Rashka
Saturday, June 28, 2008
9am—4pm

Get all the information needed to set up a metalsmithing workspace that will enable you to complete basic jewelry projects with non-ferrous metals such as silver, copper, and brass. Class will cover suggested tools and safety instruction for basic metal work 'without the use of solder'. You will choose your own class project but demonstrations will include sawing flat silver sheet, forging wire, sanding, doming, stamping, piercing and finishing. Flexible shafts will be provided for use in workshop, as well as copper for practice work. Flat sheet silver and wire will be available for purchase for a final project. You may optionally bring beads (hole size at least capable of stringing 0.018inch diameter wire) which can be incorporated into a pair of earrings. Time permitting you may be able to also complete small projects such as beading wire (making headpins), preparing bracelet/necklace clasps, making bead caps, cutting out charms/pendants and constructing earring wrapped loops. Students will purchase a supplies kit of materials needed for class from the instructor for an estimated cost of $20.

BEADED AMULET BAG
Cheryl Smeja
Sunday, July 27, 2008
10am—3pm

Nothing else feels or looks quite like a bag made of beads, but who has time to make one? This bag is made using a variation of the peyote stitch called the tubular net stitch. The bag works up much more quickly that traditional peyote or brick stitch. All materials included in class fee. We’ll do a “working” lunch so plan to bring your lunch with you.

PAPER AND TYVEK JEWELRY
Sharon Stauffer
Sunday, August 10, 2008
1—4pm

Paper and Tyvek (that indestructible stuff that Post Office envelopes are made of) make great raw material for jewelry - light weight, versatile, inexpensive and very available. In this class we’ll use commercial papers, hand colored papers and Tyvek as a foundation for earrings, pendant necklaces, charms or pins, embellished with stitching and found objects. You’ll learn how to color Tyvek and even more fun, how to melt it for some very interesting results. We’ll make some not-so-ordinary Tyvek paper beads and “dipped” paper beads that look like porcelain once encased in melted embossing powder. You’ll leave with some very fun and unique jewelry.

CLASS CODE: 8B-875
Student Fee: $45
