17C440 - Cloud Painting: An Introduction to Paper Marbling

October 28-29, 2017
Saturday-Sunday, 9am-4:30pm
Nancy Akerly

17C440 - Cloud Painting: An Introduction to Paper Marbling
17C440 - Cloud Painting: An Introduction to Paper Marbling

Around the world, from China to Turkey and all throughout Europe, paper marbling has intrigued us for over 600 years. The vivid colors and intricate designs capture our attention - and the making of marbled art is pure magic. Even a beginner can create beautiful work, yet there is enough challenge and variety that marbling can become a lifetime pursuit. We will start be showing you how a marbling studio is set up, from making the size, or carrageenan from a seaweed base called Irish Moss, to preparing the acrylic colors and assembling the necessary tools. You will first learn the basic techniques and patterns such as the French Curl, Gel-Get, Nonpareil, Stome Marbling, and Spanish Wave, among others. Then we will explore more modern variations mixed with traditional techniques. You will leave with at least 20 absolutely lovely papers to use for your own projects, whether scrap booking, jewelry, bookbinding, or framing as is.

Materials fee includes: Textoprint paper, acrylic paints, carrageenan, alum, gall and use of marbling tray, drying racks, drop cloths, marbling tools, etc.

Level: Novice and above

Student Supply List:
Wear old clothes or a smock, as marbling can be messy! Please bring: a full roll of paper towels, thin surgical type gloves to protect your hands, a sharp pencil, an iron and/or hair dryer to dry your papers to take home.

Tuition $180
Materials Fee $45

Nancy Akerly is a Door County paper artist who has taught paper arts throughout the Midwestern United States, in Germany and Taiwan. When she first created her business, Liberty Grove Paper Arts, she taught mainly Origami and Box Making, or Cartonnage. That soon led to picking up a life long enthusiasm for bookbinding and book arts - which led to paper marbling and paste paper to use in the creation of her boxes and books. She has taught at Rhinelander School of the Arts, The Clearing, Peninsula Art School, The Miller Art Museum, Sievers Fiber Art School, and for numerous Art Guilds and private groups throughout the Midwest. Her work has been shown in numerous galleries, including the Hardy Gallery, and The Miller Art Museum but her main love is teaching others to create their own masterpiece of functional art. And her teaching philosophy is "If we are not having fun, we're doing it wrong!"
