Spend a few fun hours making personalized charms for friends and family! Transfer hand sketched designs, names, or patterns onto small pieces of copper or nickel silver, then learn to use a disk cutter or metal shears to cut basic patterns. You will use a drill press to drill holes for jump rings, and flex shafts and power tools to finish your project so will learn some basic jewelry metal finishing techniques. All charms will be oxidized to enhance the design pattern. Students with chemical sensitivities should contact instructor. Supplies fee of $10 includes cost of metal to make 4-6 small charms. Kay Rashka has taught various metal smithing and jewelry-making techniques for the past 10 years, after starting metal smithing over 20 years ago to satisfy her craving for silver jewelry. Some of the classes taught in the past year have been at Peninsula Art School (Door County), Shake Rag Alley (Mineral Point, WI), UW-Madison Continuing Education department and at the Madison Bead show. A new teaching venue for 2010 will be the the Bead and Button show in Milwaukee. Her work is currently available at The Madison Museum of Contemporary Art Museum Store (mMOCA) and at Firefly Trading (Cable, WI).
