Hal Aavang and Dave Rich

Hal Aavang and Dave Rich were separately looking for a hobby after retirement and both found Shake Rag Alley. Hal started with a blacksmithing class taught by Bob Tuftee and Dave started with a welding class taught by Bob Tuftee.  Bob suggested that Dave try blacksmithing, and Hal got bitten by the bug in his first class. After taking several classes using a coal forge, both Hal and Dave decided on a more modern approach to blacksmithing using a gas forge, MIG welder, and oxy-acetylene torch. Their work includes everything from traditional hooks and fire pokers, to tomahawks and flower sculptures.  Both have home blacksmithing shops and are members of the Upper Midwest Blacksmith Association. Dave sells his work at a gallery in Paoli, while Hal gives his work away to friends.
