18A546 - Make a Tin Can Forge and a Knife

18A546 - Make a Tin Can Forge and a Knife

A forge for the minimalist! Denny will show you how to set up a soup can with judicious cuts and holes, then add quick-setting insulation around a central channel, plus a steel pipe insert. You’ll soon have a mini-forge ready for action. The fire comes from a torch directed into the pipe in the tin can’s side, creating a hot spot in the center just right for forging a steel drill bit held with tongs into a knife blade up to 3” long. You’ll hammer the glowing steel on an anvil to forge a keen knife blade then sharpen with Denny’s expert help. Next add a cholla cactus handle, and make a leather belt sheath to match your nearly 7” knife.  The small blade is excellent for whittling, woodcarving, and more. Denny will bring everything you’ll need.
