Mosaic Madness

We had a great time last year, and we're doing it again! Join intrepid explorers of the cementitious arts Heidi Dyas-McBeth and Judy Sutcliffe for a romp in the sand pile, an opportunity to create concrete and mosaic garden sculpture by messing around with Portland cement, sand, broken crockery, mirror and glass, chicken wire, hypertufa, pebbles, nippers, thin set, grout, and plenty of audacious imagination. Most of all, it's lots of fun!
It starts on Friday afternoon and continues through Sunday, with optional open studio time Friday and Saturday evenings as well. Everyone will be working on two major projects plus lots of other projects are possible in between drying times. Main project is a 2'-3' concrete sculpture decorated with mosaic. Each student starts with a two-legged steel armature, expands it with chicken wire shapes, adds coats of hypertufa and concrete, and decorates with colorful mosaic. Birds and people are among the endless possibilities. Second project is a two-dimensional art mosaic piece approximately 13"x13". You may also choose to mosaic a 15"x15" top for a rustic maple end table by Todd Kingery (purchase separately). In between you may want to try leaf casting, birdbaths, or planters. It's a casual and fluid weekend.

Woodlanders Gathering

Rustic Crafts and Nature Arts Workshops

With our hands and with simple hand tools we work with willow, twigs, bark, grasses, leaves, earth, stone, leather, gourds, and more, learning ancient and ever new techniques in workshops taught by men and women who love to share ideas and skills. Join us under the Shake Rag Alley trees, have some fun making things to take home with you, like twig tables, lamps, chairs, slab benches, Adirondack style shelves and clocks, garden gates and trellises, brooms, baskets, mosaic bird baths, garden sculpture, nature dyed silks, leather journals, rustic musical instruments, and so much more. There are  great excursions hunting fossils, learning about medicinal and edible plants, the mysteries of trees, even a chance to try your hand  at blacksmithing or using a dousing rod. With over 60 workshops to choose from packed into these four fun filled days you will get to know like-minded, nature-loving folks, and enjoy creating Woodland Crafts and Nature Arts at what many consider Shake Rag Alley’s summer camp for adults.  Join us for a memorable experience.
