19R222L - Dynamic Duo! Nature Printing on Colored Backgrounds

This two-day class will let you dive deep into the world of natural dyes and the modern process of eco-printing by combining two techniques.

We’ll begin our workshop by exploring different natural dyes, mordants, and color modifiers, learning what they are and how to work with them to color several silk scarves. After day one, you will have a thorough understanding of how to successfully apply natural color to fabric and the ways those colors can be changed.

Transformations will abound on day two, where you will learn all about eco-printing and what can happen when you print on colored fabrics. We’ll begin our day by learning how to identify dye plants and how to create a bundle. We’ll also learn how to identify tannins.

In the afternoon, we’ll harness those tannins and learn how they can be utilized to affect the outcome of an eco-print. Using your dyed scarves from the day before, you’ll bundle up plant material foraged from Shake Rag Alley’s campus and be surprised by what you unwrap at the end of the day!

All students will leave class with three finished silk scarves, dye and tannin test swatches, and the supplies and ability necessary to take your skills back home to work with your local plants, wherever you might live!

Eco-printing is a technique where plants, leaves, and flowers leave their shapes, color, and marks on fabric. Each piece is unique and one-of-a-kind. Leaves are placed by hand, creating a pleasing pattern and color palette. Then, the fabric, with the plant material inside, is tightly rolled around a pipe or stick. The “bundles” are tossed into a steamer or a pot of water. Heat releases the dye out of the plant, coloring the fabric next to the leaf. The colors are revealed as the plant material is lifted off the unwrapped fabric.
