18A434 - Go Make a Kite and Fly It!

18A434 - Go Make a Kite and Fly It!

How’d you like to spend a day combining your inner child with the making of a beautiful Japanese-style Suruga kite? And have a chance to fly it! Alfred Stark, well-known for his Japanese-style woodcuts, loves to make small kites and fly them. He’ll teach you how to split and plane a piece of bamboo to get delicate spars to glue and tie onto the back of light, but strong, Japanese paper. Your completed kite will be perfectly weighted and balanced for flying at the end of a spool of sewing thread.

Alfred will help you paint your kite as well using sumi ink and a mix of watercolor and rice paste on beautiful, Japanese, Sekishu paper. He will bring images from actual Japanese kites for inspiration.

It's fun, educational, and you’ll take home a lovely kite to fly the skies or to grace your living room wall.

Level: Novice and above
