19R222J - Electro-etching Metals

Explore the fascinating and versatile world of electro-etching using simple power supplies and low-toxicity chemicals. In the morning, after briefly going over the lingo of etching and what electro-etching itself is, we plunge right into salt water etching on copper or brass using paint pens and/or vinyl stickers as resists. In the afternoon, we will use laser-printed images as resists and cupric nitrate as the etching solution. Cupric nitrate will also etch silver. Bring your own silver or contact Deb ahead of class to purchase a small amount. Sunday’s optional lab session gives you the oh-so-important chance to practice, practice – and play! – cementing what you’ve learned, etching additional pieces or finishing pieces. The studio, all the etching equipment, and Deb will be available on Sunday to help you with your etching explorations. Register for the lab session separately.

Materials fee includes
copper and brass sheet metal, paint pens, vinyl, and toner transfer images. If you wish to etch silver, please bring your own. If you would like to purchase a small amount of silver from Deb before class, please contact her directly.
Level: Beginner and above

Student Supply List:
Feel free to bring your own hand tools, however, the studio is well equipped with basic hand tools as well as a variety of larger equipment. Bring your own silver if you wish to etch silver.

Tuition
$120
Materials Fee $15
